Paint and gas electro valve
« on: 23 September, 2015, 23:00:36 »
Hallo to everybody.
I am just buying a Contest 38 Bj.'86, hull# 52, sloop and  I am new in this forum. Of course there are some repairs and maintenances to do and the help of the Club Members will be very precious.
Now 2 questions:
1) The inner compartments  are inside painted with a matt light grey paint, with some random dots of black or brown. Can somebody tell me the maker and the type af this paint?
2) In the gas bottles compartment there is an elctrovalve to cut off the gas line ; the electro valve is operated by a switch ( with red lamp) in the galley. This valve is completely rusty and I have to replace it.  Can somebody tell me the maker and the type af this valve?
Thanks for any reply

Hi Manlio, welcome to this forum. About your quesions, not easy to answer I'm afraid.  The paint sounds like a custom job done by a previous owner so it;s hard to tell which paint was used exactly. On what surface is the paint used, wood or polyester? And is your goal to do it all again or just tip some damaged areas?
The valve also sounds like a non-standard item, perhaps a photo might help?  But imho you can replace it with any other valve as long as it operates on 12V.

Thanks  BJ.
I am asking in the forum because I think that the light grey paint with "spikkeltjes" is a standard for the inner conpartment of all Contest C38 and C37.
Before buying my 38 I saw 2 others Contest 38 and 1 Contest 37. All boats, of different age, had the same paint.
I do not speack/read dutch but on 24th October 2012 " sjoerd " posted the same question: "Welke verf op hout onder bedden". He speaks about a paint with "spikkeltjes" But I am not able to understand the replies...
And also on 20th Februar 2011 " koentje 63 " posted a similar question. But I am not able to understand the replies, again.

Hi Manlio,

It sounds like the same paint I have. Spikkeltjes is roughly equivalent to dots or perhalps more "speckles". I have not been able to track it down any further. Some areas of our 36S have earlier been painted with grey bilge paint. I'm thinking of moving over to grey paint myself as well if I want to paint the interior.

After writing and speacking with Medemblik Yacht Service I know that the paint was Sigma Sigmulto, made in Holland.
Sigma says that is no more in production for 10 years for environemental restrictions. So we have to find an alternative. That is not so easy.
Every suggestion about a replacement paint of similar aspect is wellcome.
About the gas electrovalve MYS says Truma
Thanks and greetings Manlio
