Contest 30 mark 2
« on: 19 February, 2006, 05:51:28 »
Hello Contest  Owners,

I recently purchased a 1971 Contest 30, or so the registration says. I've looked for documentation on this particular model but Conyplex says that most of the info on this model was destroyed in the fire of 2002.  I've googled the model an the results I get seem to point to the possibility thet the boat is a Contest 29 mark 2 with the modern cockpit and cabin top. It seems possible that like the 29 the early 30 was split into two runs.....  pre 1971 with the wooden combings and the doghouse and '71 to 74 with the modern cabintop and the GRP combings.  If anyone has any knowledge of Contest 30's circa 1971 to 74 built before model C30 "Joshua" I would be happy to learn more about this boat. Also If anyone has the equivalent model ( with a Danish gas engine) I would be greatful for any insight on the engine and its replacements.
Good luck to the Dutch team at the Winter Olympics.

Warm Regards,
Antonio Virgini

Hello Contest eigenaren ,

 Vriendelijke groeten,
Antonio Virgini

Hi Antonio,

although I've heard more stories about a Contest 30, MKII, I keep wondering if it's acually a C30 or if it's perhaps the early model C31 by Uus van Essen. There is some info on this model available on this website. You might verify the measurements of your boat to make sure it's a C30.

Cheers,
BJ

Hello BJ,

Many thanks for your reply.

After much goolgling in English, Dutch and some German I've determined that the boat is actually a Contest 29 mark 2. It's measurements are roughly 29' L by 9' b and 8000 lbs disp. I was very pleased to have found this boat as I do most of  my sailing alone, and it is a size that I can easily accomodate. ( I've singlehandled a 27' Albin Vega for the last 5 years including some offshore trips) I look forward to getting the boat in the water and bringing it to my sailing grounds on Lake Champlain close to the Canadian border. It is being stored for the winter about 300 miles ( 500 kms) from its new mooring.

There is also a scarcity of info on this model (eg. a pdf file) but I am certain that it has all the characteristics of its sisterships. The qualities that drew me to the Contest are its quality and robust construction.  The boat presently is equipped with the original 16 hp gas engine of Danish manufacture. If anyone has comments/experiences  on the boat or the motor I can usually get the gest of what is being written using the Babelfish translation page.

Warmest Reards.

Hi Antonio,

you're saying that the boat is equiped with a Danish gas engine, is this a Martsal engine? I didn't know that the C29 Mk2 was equipped with this type of engine, afaik they all had a Volvo..  ???     Do you have any documentation off the gas engine?

Cheers,
BJ

Hello Again BJ,

I visited the boat briefly a number of weeks ago to check on the general state of things. I was aware that the boat had a gas engine and that was refected in the price. It is my plan to replace the engine with a diesel in the future but for the time being I will go with the engine as it is. This is not a major concern as the boat will sail on a lage lake and the motor isusually use only for leaving and returning to port. It slipped my mind to actually check the brand of the engine as I was hoping that the previous owner or the agent had incorrectly listed the engine. This had happened before and I was enourmously pleased to find that my Vega had a Volvo MD6a as opposed to an Albin gas.
Unfortunately this was not the case with the Contest. I googled Martsal and got no returns on it as an engine.

It is still below 0 celcius here. I will be going to the boat in the next few weeks and will post the engine manufacturer.

Best Regards,
